The Instagram bio link problem (and what people actually do)

One link in bio. Everyone has opinions. Here's what we see small accounts doing that doesn't involve five more signups.

Instagram still gives you one link in your bio and I stopped fighting that fight around 2023.

Stories can have link stickers if you're big enough or paying for ads. Everything else goes in that single bio slot, and every marketing thread on Twitter acts like that's the end of civilization. Maybe it is. I'm not here to argue with the algorithm — I run a bakery account with 2,400 followers, not a media company.

What actually works for accounts our size: keep one short URL in the bio and change where it points when the promo changes. The bio text stays myurl.su/shop or whatever you picked in January. This month it goes to the new collection, next month it's tickets for the pop-up, you swap the redirect on your end. Followers don't relearn anything. My mom still types the same thing she saved in her notes app.

Link-in-bio tools with four buttons make sense when you genuinely need four buttons live at once — shop plus podcast plus newsletter plus booking, sure. They're also another page load on mobile data, and most people won't wait. I tested this on my own account: clicks dropped when I sent people through a link tree versus a direct short link to the menu. Small sample, could've been the week, but I went back to one link.

MyURL doesn't let you edit a destination yet (I asked), so when the promo flips you make a new short link and update the bio. Still faster than reprinting a QR sticker for an event, which I did once and do not recommend.

A creator I follow puts the same slug on screen at the end of reels and in the bio. If clicks jump right after a reel goes up, the verbal call-to-action probably worked. If the bio stays flat, maybe the on-screen text was too fast or the font was too small. You can actually see that in click timing if you're logged in — I only learned this last month and felt stupid.

Don't put a 24-hour expiring link in a permanent bio. You will forget. The bio will 404. I did this with a flash sale link in March and left it there until June. Someone DM'd "link broken??" and they were right.

Random slugs on business cards are rough too. Nobody remembers a8f3k. Spend thirty seconds picking a word you'll say on the phone.

One link is annoying. For most accounts it's also enough.
